Before we start on topical dandruff remedies, lets talk about nutrition. First, make sure you eat lots of greens and take vitamin E and B complex supplements. Biotin in your diet is very important and is considered an important anti-dandruff compound. Eat foods rich in biotin: soybeans, oats, barley, corn, garlic, avocado, ginseng, alfalfa.
Burdock (Arctium lappa) is the first herb I would recommend if you have dandruff or any skin disease. Put a 10-15 drops of Burdock Extract in your favorite shampoo and will have a very soothing effect on your scalp skin condition. You can read more about the wonderful effects of this herb from the link above.
Another great herb to use is Celandine ( Chelidonium majus), although it’s bit expensive. The best way to make it is take 4 ounces of celandine and add it to 6 cups of hot water and dissolved 1 teaspoon of potassium chloride (they sell it in supermarkets as a salt substitute). Let the whole thing stand for 2 hours and then boil it for 30 minutes. Strain it and boil the remaining liquid until only 2 cups left. Add to the solution 8 ounces of glycerin, and reduce the solution again back to 2 cups. Strain the remaining liquid and use it once a day as a hair rinse… Or if you don’t want to bother with all that work, do what I do- buy an already made Celandine extract. Then put some in your shampoo and you’re all set. It’s not going to be as potent as the herb rinse formula but it’s much better then nothing.
Here is an old Egyptian “ginger and sesame oil” formula to treat dandruff. Mix 2 tablespoons of ginger juice, 3 tablespoons of sesame oil and a half teaspoon of lemon juice. Rub the solution into your scalp every other day. You can also mix some apple cider vinegar to it or use vinegar by itself as it’s a very good old folk remedy for dandruff.
Willow leaves have an amazing healing properties for your scalp. the old recipe states to boil some willow leaves, and after straining the solution, wash your hair and scalp it it. you may also dampen your scalp with it as many times as you want to increase the effect.
Coconut oil is also a good remedy for your dandruff. Pure raw coconut oil is the best- rub it in your hair every day and your problem should be gone in no time. You can buy coconut oil in any health food store . Doesn’t matter what brand - any unrefined coconut oil will do.
Another recipe requires you to boil some white beets in water until you have about half of all the water gone. take remaining water and apply to your scalp for 2 weeks.
Finally, make a nettle tea and drink it once a day. This is not only good for dandruff but for your hair in general. You can apply the tea to your scalp as well to increase the effect of the treatment. You can also put some of the nettle extract into your shampoo.
Now you have a pretty big list of most of natural remedies used for dandruff. You can use a combination of 2 or more to get the desired effect. Be smart- if your body reacts to any of them in a negative way, discontinue use immediately.
